As users demand much more in the scale and scope of their mobile connectivity, Wi-Fi networks must evolve to address much higher capacity and scale as traffic grows. IdentiFi uniquely delivers the capacity and ease-of-use demanded by IT and mobile users, both indoors and outdoors. As BYOD continues to evolve, the number of mobile devices and the diversity of those products attaching to the Wi-Fi network will continue to grow rapidly. For example, IDC reported a 317 percent increase in wearable shipments in 2013, and shipments are expected to reach 111.9 million units by 2018, with a CAGR of 78.4 percent over the next five years. "BYOD will extend to wearable devices, and the resulting increase in demand will heavily impact wireless LANs everywhere," said Craig Mathias, a principal with the mobile and wireless advisory firm Farpoint Group. "As a result, non-disruptive wireless LAN scalability must be one of the top considerations in the WLAN evaluation process." "As proven in the most demanding venues, including NFL stadiums and sports arenas, IdentiFi wireless delivers more applications and throughput to users with fewer access points," said Ed Carney, EVP of product and customer success for Extreme Networks. "With the addition of our new outdoor ac products, Extreme offers market-leading scale and performance for big, outdoor venues as well as a variety of other complex enterprises." "In a community, such as Troy, that strongly values public education, it is imperative to provide the best resources available to prepare our students for their future," said MarkWashington, director of technology at Troy School District in Michigan. "Wireless access is no exception. With more than twenty schools throughout our district, there was a real need for a Wi-Fi solution that addressed the challenge of scalability, as traffic growth has been tremendous. ExtremeNetworks'IdentiFi Wireless solution enabled us to face these challenges head on, and provides our staff and students with an outstanding smart Wi-Fi solution and the tools that they need to succeed." Bahrain To Study Restrictions On Voip Services

Internet-based communications including Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), instant messaging and social media helped activists launch and nurture the uprisings that toppled long-standing rulers in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya in 2011. Bahrain, a majority Shi'ite country ruled by the Sunni al Khalifa family, has also been buffeted by political unrest since 2011, with mostly Shi'ite Bahrainis agitating for democratic reforms and a greater say in government. Many Arab opposition activists prefer to use VoIP and other Internet technologies to communicate because they are much harder to bug than a regular phone line, and cheaper. Bahrain's Minister of State for Communications said the government did not monitor conventional telecommunications and a decision to study the use of VoIP was motivated by a variety of risks posed by the technology. "There are examples of VoIP technology being used for pornography, which naturally clashes with our values in the kingdom," said the minister, Sheikh Fawaz bin Mohammed al-Khalifa. "We also would not want technology being used to subvert state security, or be used in fraudulent enterprises like phishing and identity theft." Since the Arab Spring uprisings, several Gulf governments have pushed for greater oversight and control of VoIP and other hard-to-trace communication tools such as BlackBerry Messenger. Saudi Arabia, which is connected to Bahrain by a causeway and sent troops to help put down the protests on the island in 2011, warned the likes of Skype and Whatsapp in March that they flouted local rules. The Saudi government banned VoIP provider Viber last month. Bahrain's government said last week it may introduce new legislation to govern VoIP to "ensure that the appropriate public policies and regulation are in place". Asked by email when a decision was likely to be made on whether to restrict VoIP in Bahrain, Sheikh Fawaz replied: "We are studying this issue but don't have a timeline yet, nor are we close to considering a ban or restriction on the use of VoIP technology." BAD FOR BUSINESS VoIP allows free internet-to-internet phone calls and messaging, while tariffs for internet-to-mobile or landline phones are dramatically cheaper than by conventional means. For that reason, commercial concerns may be a factor in recent government scrutiny of these services.

Hack To School: Beware The Open School Wi-fi | Zdnet

Ban mobile phones and wireless networks in schools, say European leaders - Telegraph

Child on a mobile phone. Ban mobile phones and wireless networks in schools, say European leaders WPA2 is a standard for authentication and encryption of the actual network connection to wi-fi. In the simplest form, which you can do with any home wireless router these days, you set a password for the wireless network and anyone who wants to connect to that network needs the password. XpressConnect is certainly accessing a central directory of users and their individual credentials rather than giving everyone the same password. In either case, the password is used to create an encryption key, probably using AES encryption. Attackers sometimes get into protected wi-fi networks with dictionary attacks. This means they try to connect using a list of common passwords ('asdf', 'password', 'kitty', etc.) As long as your password isn't one of these trivial ones and is more than a few characters long, it's highly unlikely anyone is going to be able hack into it, and most attackers won't bother; they'll just move on to find an unprotected network. But there's another advantage to WPA2 that often gets overlooked: session isolation. As I said before, on an open network, all the users can see everyone else's traffic. It's like basic Ethernet without a switch. WPA2 separates everyone's traffic from everyone else's. Because of this, if the provider of a public wi-fi network is interested in protecting their users, they should post a big sign on the wall with the network name and password on it. It doesn't matter if everyone knows the password; the proprietor wants them to get one.

There are also claims of a link to long-term risk of cancer. Scary. The majority of primary and secondary schools in the UK have no introduced wi-fi technology in their computer labs, but opponents argue that children are more vulnerable to electro-magnetic radiation because of their thin skulls and developing nervous systems. Wireless networks under Windows and their security In a report, the committee said it was crucial to avoid repeating the mistakes made when public health officials were slow to recognise the dangers of asbestos, tobacco smoking and lead in petrol. The report also highlighted the potential health risks of cordless telephones and baby monitors, which rely on similar technology and are widely used in British homes. Fears have been raised that electromagnetic radiation emitted by wireless devices can cause cancers and affect the developing brain. The findings were seized on by campaigners who oppose the spread of wireless devices. Related Articles 15 May 2011 The committee concluded that member states should: Set thresholds for levels of long-term exposure to microwaves of the type emitted by mobile phones; Introduce clear labelling on products indicating the presence of electromagnetic fields and any health risks associated with use; Ban all mobile phones and wireless networks in classrooms and schools; Run information campaigns aimed at children and young adults about the risks to human health; Step up research on less-dangerous types of antennae and mobile phones. The conclusions contradict advice from the World Health Organisation and the Department of Health , which says exposure to electromagnetic fields poses little or no risk to human health. The Council of Europe, which has 47 member states and is based in Strasbourg, cannot impose its will on governments, but is highly influential in policy-making and has often seen its decisions enacted through conventions and treaties. A draft resolution calling on governments to "take all reasonable measures to reduce exposure to electromagnetic fields" from mobile phones and similar devices, including the ban in schools was adopted unanimously by the organisation's Committee on the Environment, Agriculture and Local and Regional Affairs .

Bring Your Own Tech Programs Charge Up Students Tags: pladpenguin00 February 13, 2014 8:47:41 AM Ok so i am currently using my laptop to type this and i am using the schools internet here at georgia southern. But my desktop is not connecting. It started yesterday when we had icing problems and the internet shutdown. Well its obviously back but my desktop wont connect. The school uses an identity confirmation application to make sure that we dont have squatters on the network. The moment i enter my id and password and press enter, google shoots me an error page that says 1 of 2 things, either the network is down or that there was a connection break and that i should reload the page. well ive reloaded the page and turned off my computer, reset my netgear wifi adapter, run diagnostics on the wifi, disconnected, reconnected, so on and so forth. Im at the point where i dont know what to do on my end anymore and the phone number for the assistance on the other end, no one is there. I assume because we have the day off but i dont know. So im back at good old tom's hardware looking for some answers.

Nsn, Nyu Wireless Host First Brooklyn 5g Summit; Mobile Industry Leaders, Academia To Explore The Future Of 5g Wireless

Wireless network opens doors for N Cape learners

The Brooklyn 5G Summit will look beyond the hype and enable industry and academia to define 5G together. It will explore existing measurements and models that characterize wireless channels at frequency bands above 6 GHz, and will initiate the derivation of further research and standardization activities aimed at creating 5G channel models based on measurements. The Summit will also explore and define antenna technologies that exploit the beamforming gains at higher frequency bands. "Demand for data transmission is skyrocketing, and while the millimeter wave spectrum and new technologies hold the promise of increasing consumer peak data rates by up to a thousand-fold over today's cellphones, it is vital that corporate leaders and governments step up their timetable to commit to opening up the spectrum above 20 GHz while launching standards activities for bringing about innovation that will spawn tremendous advances in consumer products," said Professor Theodore S. (Ted) Rappaport, conference organizer and founder and director of NYU WIRELESS. "The Brooklyn 5G Summit will bring together the top minds throughout the globe to accelerate our drive for solutions."Discussions will be centered on cutting-edge themes, including:- Requirements and technologies for 5G;- Propagation and channel modeling at new spectrum bands, from 3 to 100 GHz, including antenna design at these bands;- 5G spectrum availability and regulatory issues; and- Innovative architectures and systems needed to build out the capacity demands of tomorrow.

Ban Mobile Phones And Wireless Networks In Schools, Say European Leaders - Telegraph

Wireless Network Opens Doors for N Cape Learners

SmartVoice The committee is composed of 84 MPs and politicians from member states, and its vice-chairman is Lord Prescott, the former Deputy Prime Minister. Its members reviewed the latest research on the effects of electromagnetic fields and took fresh evidence from experts before reaching its conclusions. The draft resolution will now go before the council's full Parliamentary Assembly for approval. Public health and telecommunication experts are divided on the dangers posed by mobile phones and other wireless devices. A report by Britain's Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research Programme in 2007 said that there was no association between mobile phones and adverse health effects, but it is now conducting a more detailed study into the long-term effects of mobile phones. Other researchers have found no association between short-term mobile phone use and cancer. A major epidemiological study published last year found no increased risk of cancer from using mobile phones over a ten-year period.

Child on a mobile phone. Ban mobile phones and wireless networks in schools, say European leaders Science and Technology Deputy Minister Michael Masutha today launched wireless network, which will give thousands of learners access to the internet. The Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) project is an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), aimed at demonstrating alternative models to establishing information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure in rural areas. The project is funded by the European Union and implemented by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research's Meraka Institute. Speaking at the launch held at Learamele Special School, Deputy Minister Masutha said having access to ICT will help rural communities to access information. "These days it is common knowledge that ICT has a positive impact on people's lives," he said. Deputy Minister Masutha said a number of ICT projects were being implemented to improve education. CONNECT Computer Solves Wireless Networking Cost/Performance Issues for Schools with Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi - Yahoo Finance

Ruckus Wireless, Inc. The school's previous wireless network could accommodate a maximum of 300 students and had no encryption capabilities. Out of frustration with poor Wi-Fi coverage, students had been bringing their own routers onto campus in an attempt to work around the problem, but those routers created network traffic problems for the school. Administrators decided it was time for an upgrade and began researching potential solutions. Based on a recommendation from a colleague at a neighboring college, the school's network security administrator, Paul Fabian, investigated Enterasys Networks and said he was impressed with the company's commitment to helping the college create an effective, efficient network. The college's new IdentiFi wireless network from Enterasys includes two controllers, 110 wireless access points, and switches to provide improved coverage for the college's 12 campus buildings. "We've gone from accommodating 300 or so students on our wireless network at peak times, to the point where we can comfortably handle triple that capacity," said Fabian in a prepared statement. "I no longer have to worry about the network, and we can evaluate new initiatives, such as the possibility of adding wireless access to student dorms." Enterasys offers a variety of wired and wireless solutions that can help educational institutions address the challenges and risks associated with the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) phenomenon, according to Vala Afshar, CMO and chief customer officer for the company. "The typical college student today has between two and five personal devices, including a Smartphone, music player, PC, tablet, and portable game console," said Afshar in a prepared statement. "They want access to wireless and uninterrupted service to operate their devices. Enterasys solutions enable higher ed institutions to deliver quality wireless networking technology that benefits the students, faculty, and administration on campus." The Milwaukee School of Engineering serves more than 2,500 undergraduate and graduate students, and employs 500 faculty members.

Milwaukee School of Engineering Upgrades Wireless Network -- Campus Technology

"We now have coverage and performance beyond what I thought would be possible on our limited budget. CONNECT and Ruckus has been a huge gift to our entire school the students, teachers, and even outside visitors who need access." New, Smarter Wi-Fi Solves an Old School Problem Bethany Community School, a K-6 elementary school comprised of four buildings, is one CONNECT success story. The school needed to replace an outdated Wi-Fi network made up of a few controller-less 802.11b and 802.11g access points. Bethany had several notebook computers on-site that were plagued with login issues due to the constraints of this legacy wireless network. Adding to the strain on the existing network, the school added approximately 50 iPads for student use on campus last year. At that point, Bethany's sole IT person, who also serves as the librarian, decided to seek a new, centrally managed system that could provide higher performance and more reliability, as well as secure guest access, in order to support the influx of those iPads, and the other existing notebooks. After receiving bids from several providers, Bethany chose CONNECT to deploy a Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi network, covering the entire campus with less than half the number of APs than were quoted by other vendors. With features like Zero-IT on-boarding and Dynamic Pre-shared Key (PSK) secure access features, Bethany has since concluded that the Ruckus ZoneFlex system was the best choice all-around. "We are very happy with the Ruckus solution provided by CONNECT Computer," said John Barile, Superintendent of Schools for Bethany.

It looks at protection, speed and fulfillment rates, highlighting some differences as well as similarities for businesses by place. Review the infographic to discover some very interesting stats! HP servers One essential stat which is slightly surprising is that only 60 % of metropolitan businesses make use of a broadband connection. What is not so unusual nevertheless, is that just 41 % of rural companies use a broadband hookup, with 34 % of these businesses disappointed with the reliability and 25 % disappointed with the worth for money. Looking at the infographic it is clear that both city and rural businesses are unhappy with the speed of their broadband connection with 48 % and 63 % of companies being disappointed respectively. East Anglia and some parts of Wales are the least satisfied with their high speed broadband rate which represents the absence of 3G drivers in these areas, other than for little wallets. The map of broadband fulfillment rates largely represents the 3G protection map, except for some parts of central England, particularly Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire which have reduced fulfillment rates with their broadband however are well covered by 3G operators, suggesting the use of mobile information connectivity can be a viable choice for these locations for Internet services. Rockdale Boe Recommends Wireless Updates For All Schools

Knesset Panel: Education Ministry acting to reduce radiation in schools

For a total cost of $911,918.70, which will come from SPLOST III funds, RCPS plans to expand its technology requirements, as outlined in the school systems strategic plan. If approved by the BOE, MXN Corporation will provide the equipment and services necessary for the wireless upgrades. The school systems Purchasing Department sought bids from various vendors, however MXN was able to give the school system a discount, according to documents from the school system. The original cost of the project would have been $1,196,248.70, but with the discount, RCPS could save $284,330. This was no small feat to get to this level and save the taxpayers of this community nearly $300,000, said RCPS Superintendent Richard Autry. If were talking about digitizing, we have to have infrastructure, and this had to be step one to make sure its not just piecemeal a few schools were online but all of our schools in our entire district. The recommendation to approve the bid from MXN was also to remain consistent with the equipment and services installed at Conyers and Memorial middle schools earlier this year.

These hurdles include budgetary constraints, limited technical resources, geographically dispersed campus buildings, and outdated infrastructures that cannot support new applications. For these reasons and more, voice-over IP (VoIP) - specifically, wireless VoIP - has emerged as a popular choice for educational institutions. While only 19% of colleges and universities have formally deployed VoIP, 64% are considering it, according to the EDUCAUSE Core Data Service 2003 Summary Report (log on to www.educause.edu/ir/library/pdf/PUB8001.pdf ). Though progressing more slowly, its adoption in K-12 is also on the rise. Furthermore, according to two surveys from Market Data Retrieval, 37% of K-12 public schools (from The College Technology Review 2003-2004) and 70% of colleges and universities (from Technology in Education 2004) report that they do use wireless networks. Together, VoIP and wireless technology offer better geographic coverage, increased mobility, improved network performance, and significant cost savings for schools and campuses. K-12 Advantages Today, the majority of U.S. classrooms are not equipped with phones. The existing voice system for most K-12 environments is a traditional PBX (private branch exchange), which provides a basic telecommunications link from the main office to the world outside of the school. This system typically d'es not allow teachers hosting to communicate with each other or enable them to be reached directly by parents. It also d'es not let mobile staff, such as security and maintenance personnel, communicate with teachers or office staff.

Integrating Voice Into the School Network: Benefits of Wireless VoIP

Furthermore, in classes where teachers use computers as part of their lessons, a direct cable connection is encouraged as opposed to a wireless connection. He also added that currently schools are in the process of converting their wireless infrastructure to cable connections. Sam Kaplan, director of ICT infrastructure and scientific technologies added that the Environmental Protection Ministry will perform random checks of schools as part of its responsibilities and as a regulator. "I am pleased the Environmental Protection Ministry responded positively to our appeal. We will implement a budget transfer and begin to perform the tests to correct deficiencies," he said. When asked by committee chair MK Amram Mitzna regarding an end date for all the inspections, Kaplan replied he did not foresee an end to the tests and said they would be carried out periodically. He further said it was all a question of budget and said he was unaware how much the Education Ministry would decide to allocate to this issue.

Prodec Networks It Trends For 2013 Predictions Are Not That Far Off

Firstly, smart devices continue to be prevalent this link amongst businesses as predicted, but the trend for using smart devices as a primary computer has not taken off as much as expected. Employees in over 60% of SMEs and large organisations and 75% of medium sized businesses do not use their smart devices as a primary computer. Large organisations have seen a significant rise in demand for BYOD in 2013. For smaller businesses, BYOD is not rising in comparison to 2012. Over 70% of very large organisations have seen a rise in the demand for BYOD and a further 57% have seen a rise in the demand for security management solutions as a consequence. Businesses do not seem to be talking up Mobile Device Management solutions as predicted by Prodec Networks. This is a concern given the risk businesses are putting themselves in if devices are stolen, lost or misused, as unauthorised users can access the corporate network. The second finding is that a high proportion of businesses have not seen an increase in demand for big data solutions (over 60% of SMEs and more than 50% of large organisations). This may in part be due to a lack of understanding of the term big data which can for different businesses mean different things. Finally, the majority of businesses surveyed stated that they have adequate wireless solutions in place that meet the demands of users. Although businesses currently do not need to upgrade their wireless solutions, they cannot afford to become complacent with the increase in mobile use and functionality still rising. China To Ramp Up Epidemic Vax System

Stromasys Hardware Virtualization : CHARON and VMware deliver Maximum Reliability for Legacy Systems

Officials say the system should be set up by 2015 and expect it will accommodate "major epidemic situations as quickly and effectively as those found in developed countries"5 years later, according to Xinhuanet. It will provide not only increased vaccine production capacity but also improved epidemic monitoring and additional R&D, the report says. Although China uses the current epidemic-response capabilities of developed countries as a benchmark, it may want to shoot a bit higher. The Chinese goals are similar to those of the U.S. , as outlined in the 2010 National Vaccine Plan. It also calls for surge capacity during epidemics, faster manufacturing via new, non-egg-based production processes and additional R&D. Earlier this year, the U.S.

Researchers say that she is an 'elite suppressor:' her immune cells could hold the key to solving the vexing riddle of creating a vaccine for HIV. "This is an extremely rare case of co-infection in a controlled, monogamous relationship, which showed us how a strong immune system in the elite suppressor kept the virus from replicating and infecting other cells," said Joel Blankson, the senior study investigator and infectious disease specialist. The woman's CD-8 T cells were able to stall review roughly 90 percent of HIV replication, a duplicate of the virus that affects her husband. The researchers want to learn what kind of cytokines--immune system signaling proteins--are made by her T cells. Historically, VAX has competed with a number of Hewlett-Packard and IBM computers in the small enterprise and university-scientific marketplace. In earlier times, this size and price range of computer was known as the minicomputer . Today, VAX and its competitors sell "servers" for business networks that use the client/server computing model. DEC indicates that over 250,000 VAX systems are in use. As of October, 1996, models were in the $18,000 to 46,000 price range. Based on VMS, its operating system is called OpenVMS . Among other features, OpenVMS can be used with special software that facilitates its use with Windows NT servers. OpenVMS also supports the open standard Portable Operating System Interface set of commands and C language programming interface, effectively making it both a VMS system and a UNIX system. Eric S.

"By using virtual servers on VMware we were able to almost completely eliminate the risk of an outage, while our application continue to run on VMS", explains Janos Kreis, System Manager at Kraus & Naimer. Kraus & Naimer has been using CHARON for various VAX server models in conjunction with VMware for several months. For some time now, many IT administrators have been waiting for CHARON to receive the VMware Ready logo, because large companies and government organisations are still working with OpenVMS on DEC VAX and AlphaServer systems, which were built in the 1980s and 1990s. The operating system still has the reputation to be the safest and most stable of its kind, but frequently hardware threatens to fail after more than 20 years of productive use. Together, CHARON and VMware will ensure that operating system and applications can continue to be used without any interruption. Please refer to the CHARON on VMware product section of Stromasys website for more details at http://www.stromasys.ch/hardware-virtualization-solutions/charon-on-vmware/ About the Stromasys SA :- Stromasys S.A. is a privately held, global company headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland which provides commercial cross-virtualization technologies to thousands of users in more than 50 countries. How To Install Windows Server 2012 On Hp Proliant Servers

HP brings converged infrastructure smarts to its servers

HP OneView Figure A HP Smart Update Manager (SUM) locates the latest versions of Windows Server 2012 drivers. (Click to enlarge) To run HP-SUM, download the SPP software at hp.com; the current release at this writing is 2012.08. Expand the software distribution, locate and run the E:\hp\swpackages\hpsum.exe file (where E: represents the drive letter the virtual SPP software DVD is mounted to). If you will be installing HP Agents, it is recommended that you pre-install the SNMP Service feature on Windows Server 2012. The HP Systems Insight Homepage on the computer will require SNMP to render any data. The first thing HP-SUM will do is prompt you to connect over the Internet to ftp.hp.com for the latest updates. If you have established an on-site HP software repository, you can connect to that rather than, or in 3G bonded networks UK addition to, using the Internet. Figure B shows the download of components from HP.com in progress.

Gartner: HP Server Shipment Share Slides In Q2

Any new servers added to the group would automatically be configured to the group settings. Administrators using the software can also apply firmware updates across many servers, or search for an individual server, using a MAC (media access control) address or some other unique identifier. OneView is not HPs first offering for the emerging market for what is being called converged infrastructure, or the effort to manage equipment across an entire data center. HP also offers Intelligent Management Center (IMC) for its networking hardware. Over time, many of the IMC capabilities may also be folded into OneView, said Tom Joyce, an HP senior vice president and general manager for the companys Converged Systems unit, during the Web conference. OneView will only work with HP servers, though the software also provides a REST (Representational State Transfer) API (application programming interface), allowing administrators to link OneView with other infrastructure management software. The APIs can also be used by HP partners to generate new systems and software for their customers.

HP Servers Buyer's Guide

Olds added that the introduction of the long-delayed Itanium Tukwila processor, a new revisions of the HP-UX operating system and a published roadmap that runs out past five years have given HP's Unix customers a reason to take a look at refreshing their installed base. Newer servers include Integrity blades, such as the BL860c i2, BL870c i2 and the BL890c i2. Bartlett said they all offer 2.5 times the compute density compared to traditional rack mount servers. These blades use the Intel Itanium 9300 series processor (two to four cores) and come with various amounts of memory. While the BL860c i2 comes with up to 96 GB RAM, the BL890c i2 has up to 384 GB. But blades aren't the only game in town on Integrity. The rx2800 i2 is a newer two-socket rackmount server aimed at SMBs or small remote deployments, such as branch office applications. It offers expanded memory, I/O and disk capacity in a 2U footprint with eight-core scalability. At the top of the line is the Integrity Superdome 2 that includes a modular, bladed design, common components and standard racks intended to power mission-critical applications.

1 server position globally, ahead of Dell and IBM. Dell placed second in terms of global unit shipments, with a 1.7 percent year-over-year increase in shipments. The HP server unit share declines comes with Dell, HP and other server vendors battling for share in a global market that is essentially flat. In the first quarter, HP experienced a 15 percent drop in shipments year over year to 576,835 servers, according to the final Gartner data. In contrast, Dell's unit server shipment for the same period was up 2.6 percent, according to the final Gartner data. Server unit sales gains in China by Lenovo and Huawei have hurt HP because of that country's push to get Chinese companies to buy from local suppliers, said a source briefed on the preliminary Gartner data. Dell, meanwhile, experienced key wins in Europe, the source said. The Chinese server market has grown 21.6 percent year over year, according to Gartner data obtained by CRN.

New Cisco Network Fabric Reins In The Internet Of Everything

One Put, One Call Option To Know About for Cisco Systems

Loading+chart+©+2013+TickerTech.com This is an ongoing event (phenomenon, really) that the company has dubbed the Internet of Everything. Network World reports the NCS isnt so much a router as a network fabric family intended to scale Ciscos CRS router cores and ASR 9000 edge routers from centralized systems to distributed architectures. The system acts as a central nervous system that merges service provider IP and optical networks with Dynamic Fabric Automation networking and the Cisco Unified Computing System server in data centers. The programmable (onePK API) system is powered by Ciscos new nPower X1 integrated network processor, which packs in 4 billion transistors on a single chip. Cisco emphasizes how the programmability and virtualization capabilities in the NCS will allow service providers to speed up the changeover to software-defined networking and network-function virtualization. Speaking with Network World about the fabric, Ray Mota, founder of ACG Research, notes that with "all of the benefits and advantages on why customers wanted a fabric in their data center, the next logical step is to extend those to the WAN a WAN fabric that is capable of virtualizing with a platform, with southbound and northbound API's that allows programmability of the network." The three components to Ciscos NCS fabric family include NCS 6000, NCS 4000 and NCS 2000, which can be deployed and managed individually or as an integrated system. Shipping today, the NCS 6000 is the first 1 Tbps line card.

Cisco Systems, Inc. (CSCO) Traders Snap Up Short-Term Calls

So unless Cisco Systems, Inc. sees its shares fall 8.5% and the contract is exercised (resulting in a cost basis of $20.38 per share before broker commissions, subtracting the 62 cents from $21), the only upside to the put seller is from collecting that premium for the 8.7% annualized rate of return. Worth considering, is that the annualized 8.7% figure actually exceeds the 3% annualized dividend paid by Cisco Systems, Inc. by 5.7%, based on the current share price of $22.96. And yet, if an investor was to buy the stock at the going market price in order to collect the dividend, there is greater downside because the stock would have to lose 8.54% to reach the $21 strike price. Always important when discussing dividends is the fact that, in general, dividend amounts are not always predictable and tend to follow the ups and downs of profitability at each company. In the case of Cisco Systems, Inc., looking at the dividend history chart for CSCO below can help in judging whether the most recent dividend is likely to continue, and in turn whether it is a reasonable expectation to expect a 3% annualized dividend yield. Turning to the other side of the option chain, we highlight one call contract of particular interest for the February 2014 expiration, for shareholders of Cisco Systems, Inc. ( NASD: CSCO ) looking to boost their income beyond the stocks 3% annualized dividend yield. Selling the covered call at the $24 strike and collecting the premium based on the 81 cents bid, annualizes to an additional 10.4% rate of return against the current stock price (this is what we at Stock Options Channel refer to as the YieldBoost), for a total of 13.4% annualized rate in the scenario where the stock is not called away. Any upside above $24 would be lost if the stock rises there and is called away, but CSCO shares would have to climb 4.5% from current levels for that to occur, meaning that in the scenario where the stock is called, the shareholder has earned a 8.1% return from this trading level, in addition to any dividends collected before the stock was called.

Cisco Simplifies Collaboration Security via Its New Expressway

But when those same conversations take place outside the office using devices that are connected to the corporate network, confidence in the level of security naturally drops. Cisco wants to make it possible to have as much confidence in collaboration security both inside and out of the office. At the Cisco Collaboration Summit 2013 conference today, Cisco unveiled the Cisco site web Expressway gateway, which extends the security framework used in the office to mobile computing devices running TelePresence or Jabber communications software without requiring additional registrations and passwords. In addition, Cisco announced Jabber Guest, an instance of its communications software that leverages Cisco Expressway to extend collaboration permissions to guest workers who are accessing the corporate network via browsers that support the emerging WebRTC standard . According to Peder Ulander, vice president of marketing for the Cisco Collaboration Technology group, with more companies than ever having to support contractors and other temporary workers on corporate networks, finding a way to seamlessly extend security policies to those people has been a time-consuming challenge. Cisco Expressway provides a gateway through which security policies can automatically be extended to anyone accessing the network. In addition to providing more secure collaboration software, Cisco also announced Intelligent Proximity, software that allows users to synchronize their desk phones with mobile computing devices. The first phone to support this capability is the Cisco DX650 Smart Desk Phone, which is based on the Android operating system. Finally, Cisco unveiled a Cisco IP Phone 7800 Series, which is a Class-1 Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) device that supports wideband audio. Whats most significant about all this is that Cisco is providing a way for IT staff in charge of collaboration to extend security policies without requiring the intervention of a security specialist.

(NASDAQ:CSCO) today, with roughly 46,000 calls switching hands thus far. This is a 61% increase over typical intraday levels, and more than double the number of puts exchanged. The most active option is the weekly 11/8 23-strike call, which has seen north of 18,100 contracts cross the tape -- including several large blocks. The bulk of these calls traded at the ask price, suggesting they were bought. Meanwhile, today's volume has surpassed present open interest levels, and implied volatility has ticked higher, signaling the initiation of new positions. In this scenario, the call buyers' objective is for CSCO to power north of the $23 mark by the closing bell on Nov. 8, when these weekly options expire. Since the shares are currently docked at $22.41, this would entail a rise of more than 2.6%.

Global Oil and Gas Security Market Report 2013-2018

This problem is faced by both developed nations and the developing countries and the companies involved in oil and gas exploration and processing. Oil and gas sector play an important role in the development of any country and securing these infrastructures is of critical importance. Due to online networking, implementation of Industrial Control Systems (ICS), and other technological implementations, oil and gas sectors are now prone to cyber-attacks as well. The rise in the terrorist activities all over the globe has also raised concerns about the security. Many countries and international regulatory bodies have designed and planned policies and compliances for the oil and gas sector for securing their infrastructures. The companies have to strictly follow these compliances and policies for fortifying the infrastructures from outside threats. There are many Tier1 companies who are providing dedicated security solutions for physical and network security to the oil and gas industries. Increased physical and cyber-attacks, pressure due to strict governmental policies and compliances, and rise in the exploration for oil and gas from both developed and developing nations have given a boost to the oil and gas security market.
